F.A.Q.

There are five main categories of Leather:

  1. Fullgrain Leather – Full grain Leather is cut from top layer of the hide, which is the is the  strongest and most durable section.  Fullgrain leather  is  undoctored, and retains the natural markings of the original hide, including any natural and unique marks or scarring that may have occured.  Fullgrain Leather is considered to be the highest quality leather in the industry. All Samson Leather Products use Fullgrain Leather.

  2. Topgrain Leather – Similar to Full grain Leather, Top grain leather is a high quality leather that also comes from the top layer of the hide, but has the natural markings removed by buffing and sanding. This alters the surface to provide a more uniform look, but the sanding process also removes some of the strength.

  3. Split Grain Leather – Split grain leather is a layered cut of leather beneath the top grain, within the  lower levels of the hide. It doesn’t contain any of the hide’s original markings or grain, and usually undergoes treatment that significantly alter the surface. It is still a relatively

  4. Genuine Leather is considered by experts in the industry to be a very low-quality product.  Genuine Leather is cut from the bottom of the hide, beneath full grain and split grain, and is not nearly as durable. Genuine Leather is highly processed, and contains non of the hide’s original grain.

  5. Bonded Leather – Technically, bonded leather isn’t really leather. It is an amalgam of leather dust, leather scraps, vinyl, plastic and glue that has been bonded together through heavy processing.  Bonded Leather and Genuine Leather are sometimes referred to as ” double faced” leather.

Samson Leather Products are sewn entirely by hand using a method called Saddle Stitching. With Saddle Stitching, the Leathercraftsman uses two needles to create a double line of stitching in a single row of holes. It is the strongest, and most secure of all stitches.

Leather Patina is a beautiful and natural aging process that occurs on all natural, unprocessed leathers. It is a hallmark of high quality, natural leather. Naturally tanned leather is organic, not sealed by unnatural, harsh chemicals. It is porous, and will continue to absorb elements of the world.  from the sunshine outside, to your skins natural oils. A beautiful patina will take time to form, and will be just as unique as you.
